My Beautiful Mother, Lila Marie (Pound) Layne

Mother passed from this life into the next in August of 2001. I miss her terribly and am looking forward to the day I can see her again. To spend all eternity with her will be so awesome. She was a generous, loving, kind, fun mother. And the list could go on and on about her attributes. I love her dearly. You never get over losing someone you love, you just learn how to cope. Thank God for the promise of Heaven!

Mothers are more precious than all the world’s finest diamonds and costly gold.

I am not sure when my Mother became one of my best friends…I guess that’s not important. We went through thick and thin together. In all honesty more THICK than THIN. We laughed together, cried together, sometimes we even laughed and cried together simultaneously.

So much of what I learned of love I learned at home. I consider myself to come from a loving family. Not perfect, but loving. I am one of four children. My brother Keith has gone on to his reward. Linda and Karla live in Texas. I believe if all four of us could collaborate we would say that we were blessed with a loving, godly (nearly perfect) Mother.

Mothers are everything for us when we are small…our lives revolve around her. For everything that we need we call mother. To protect us from all perceivable dangers we want her around us. To take us out we hold her hand. To kiss away our wounds we run to her. And for a warm hug and love we look for her. She is the focal point of our lives, the greatest human being in the world. On the special occasion of Mothers Day pay tribute to your mother – the greatest blessing of God on you. Let her know you love her and care about her.

God Bless! And Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers who read this blog!

Who knew? I knew some of these things but found some others interesting.
#1 Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat’s ear… massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat’s skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
#2 Kills fleas instantly…Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog’s bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.
#3 Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers?

#4 Did you know that Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?
#5 Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.
#6 Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles.
#7 #8 with 7 Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
#9 Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-even though the product was never been advertised for this use.
Band Aid Honey remedy for skin blemishes… cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
#10 Listerine therapy for toenail fungus:Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine Mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
#11 Easy eyeglass protection… to prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
#12 Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer… if menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
#13 Smart splinter remover: Just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
#14 Hunt’s Tomato Paste boil cure… cover the boil with Hunt’s Tomato Paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters… to disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine, a powerful antiseptic.
#15 Vinegar to heal bruises… soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
#16 Quaker Oats for fast pain relief… it’s not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Here’s a few pictures I took today. The hills are so beautiful this time of year. The winter rains make everything so green. In the summer the hills turn golden but all the trees are in full bloom and green. It is beautiful then too. It’s like God drapes the hills in gold velvet and then takes a handful of emeralds and sprinkles them across the landscape. I’ll try to remember to take some photos in the summer too. Enjoy! Saturday I was in San Francisco doing some shopping with my sister-in-law, Patricia.  It was one of those beautiful December, San Francisco days.  I took this picture of the TransAmerica Pyramid.  Yes the sky was really that blue.

The Pyramid was finished in 1972 and having a height of 260 meters, towers out over the rest of the city.  It has 48 floors with a 64 meters high spire on top, covered with aluminum panels.

Today was a very special day for a man in our church.¬† His mother was in service with him today.¬† You may think well, that’s not so great.¬† However,¬†this was the first time they have ever been to church together in their life.¬† The Lord has done so much for this man.¬† God has put¬†him and his wife and children together after many years of being apart.¬† I cannot go into detail about everything¬†his life¬†entails.¬† Just suffice it to say, Miracles never cease!¬†¬†¬†¬† I noticed his mother from the very first song we began to sing, “God Is Here”.¬† Part of the words are, “….Come and lay down the burdens you have carried, for in this Sanctuary, God Is Here”.¬† Tears began to roll down her cheeks and she lifted her hands and worshipped the Lord.¬† It was as if you could visibly see the “burdens” roll from her shoulders.¬† And then my husband preached an incredible message on “Lessons from the Potter’s House”.¬† He talked about how God can take your past and give you beauty for ashes.¬† And how when we become His we are new creatures in Christ Jesus.¬† Those of you in the church know what I’m talking about but to someone who has never heard this great message it is such a beautiful revelation.¬† We can start life anew.¬† Again I saw her as she wept and worshipped at the altar.¬† The most¬†precious thing to me was when she finished praying and her and her son embraced in a loving embrace.¬† I know that God is doing great things in her life and I’m so happy for her.¬†¬† She was not the only one that received this kind of blessing but it was just so precious to me that I wanted to share¬†this one¬†with you.

Yesterday morning at 10:00 we went to the Home-going of Blanche Faye Kilgore Shoemake.¬† As we walked into the sanctuary you could already feel the sweet, comforting presence of the Lord.¬† As the service progressed and different ones spoke and sang there was such an awesome presence of God there.¬† I believe that is because we were honoring the life of one of God’s favorites,¬† Blanche Shoemake.¬† What a great lady she was.¬† Sis. Shoemake lived for the Lord from a young child until the day God called her home.¬† Her life impacted so many other lives that we know about and hundreds and even thousands that we do not know.¬† She was a lady of prayer and many talents.¬† Sis. Shoemake always tried her best at everything she did.¬† When she cooked a meal.¬† When she taught Sunday School.¬† When she was raising her family. As a hostess.¬† As a wife.¬† And if you don’t believe that one you would have to just hear how Bro. Shoemake talked about his beloved Blanche.¬† I heard him say one time when I was little girl,¬† “if Blanche ain’t gonna be my wife in Heaven, I don’t even want to go”.¬†¬† We have¬†laughed about that statement many times down through the years but he was just trying to express what a love he had for her.¬† Sis. Shoemake always looked so “spiffy” and classy, so put together.¬† I wish I had pictures of¬† her in her little hats.¬† She was so pretty.¬† However, it wasn’t just her physical beauty but her spirit that made her the beautiful lady she was.¬† I remember one time sitting at her table with her as we ate a snack and I asked her how she had kept herself so slim and trim all of these years.¬† And she said, “well, honey when you go to someone’s house they will always fix their favorite and best dishes for you.¬† At the end of the meal when they offer you a piece of pie for dessert you tell them just how big you want your slice to be and if they bring you a bigger piece you only eat the amount that you said you wanted.”¬† And, I said, “well I always feel guilty if I don’t eat it all, or afraid they will think I don’t like it.”¬† And she said, “Oh no, no, no.¬† When you say that’s all you want then that is all you are obligated to eat.”¬† That is just one memory but it has stuck in my brain for more than 28 years.¬† She gave me some other advice that day too but I won’t share that here.¬† LOL¬† She was just a priceless Jewel and I’m so thankful I knew her¬†and had the opportunity to be around her some in my life.¬† I know the angels in heaven sang a beautiful welcome song when Blanche¬†Shoemake stepped across the threshold.¬† And I’m sure the Lord said, “Welcome Home, thou good and faithful servant.”

Linda, I know I always tell the story of how I thought you were a princess when we were growing up but it’s so true. I always admired your poise and gracefulness. When you walked into a room you always turned heads. I know it was not only your physical beauty but also your spirit.

I use to love to hear you, Keith and Mother sing. You could go so low and I thought that was so cool. My favorite song was, “The Next Step”.

I watched as you wrapped Wendell around your finger and I laughed. Some things never change. LOL I’m so proud that you have a great man that has loved you for so many years and treated you like the princess you are. I have also watched as you have come through some dark valleys and seen you only grow in more grace. You are a great wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, pastor’s wife and SISTER.

I pray that your birthday is blessed beyond measure.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! To my big sis!

I will go to Foster’s Freeze and eat a Hot Fudge Sundae for you on your birthday.

Today I went with several ladies from our church to Filoli House and Garden. Located thirty miles south of San Francisco on the eastern slope of the Coast Range, the 654-acre Filoli estate contains as its central portion a historic house and sixteen acres of formal garden. The house contains 36,000 square feet of interior floor space on two floors and a mezzanine. There are forty-three rooms and seventeen fireplaces. It was quite a site. The manicured gardens are absolutely beautiful. In the rose garden I took several pictures but this one caught my eye the most and reminded me of this poem. It is so true!

It is only a tiny rosebud,
This flower of God’s design;
But I cannot unfold its petals
With these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers
Is not known to such as I.
This flower God opens so sweetly,
Would in my hands fade and die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
This flower of God’s design,
How can I think I have wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?

So I’ll trust in Him for His leading
Each moment of every day.
I will look to Him for His guidance
Each step of the pilgrim way.

The pathway that lies before me,
My Heavenly Father knows.
I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments,
Just as He unfolds the rose.
